Our services are designed to ease the trauma of having a parent incarcerated. Having a parent ripped out of a child’s life is one of the most traumatic experiences a child can go through, yet it is the least talked about, they are the unmentioned victims. The caregiver is burdened with supporting the family on her own. The child is five times more likely to drop out of school, 50 times more likely to become depressed, suffer PTSD, and 8 times more likely to have issues with substance abuse, be arrested, and even suicide. Incarceration has taken an often overlooked toll on children with incarcerated parents. An estimated 2.5 million children have an incarcerated parent. 3% of the children in America have a parent incarcerated, and in our area that number is much higher at a staggering . Of those parents, 60% are incarcerated in a prison 100 miles or more from their home, making family visits extremely difficult.
